Happy Hump Day and welcome back to the 55 Word Challenge.  It’s been a busy week and I almost didn’t realize that Wednesday was here again.  For those that are uninitiated, the 55 Word Challenge is a contest to write a story in 55 words or less. Not an easy task, but fun and I have been blown away by some of the entries. See for yourself, all the past contests can be found here.
The challenge begins at noon Eastern time every Wednesday and ends at noon Thursday. The story is based on one of three photo prompts and can be written in any genre you choose. The story is to be posted in the comment section below, along with your twitter handle or email address, so I can contact you if you are the winner.
And what does the winner get? This purty badge for one. For two, a gift card for $5.00 from Amazon. (The prize will be rewarded within a week and sent to your email.)

Photo Prompts:

If anyone is interested in guest judging please let me know, also if you would like to donate a prize for next week’s contest, (or any other week,) let me know. This could be a copy of your book or anything else you want to offer.

Shameless Promo:

Just released, Monsters! is free today only and Progeny is free today and tomorrow.

Monsters! is 13 stories about...monsters. Most of them are stories written during the A to Z Challenge, but some are older stories that fit the theme. You will find the dead in here as well as a few demons and spirit legends.

Progeny is a non-sparkly vampire story. Judith is a young girl who has spent the last few months on a ship, traveling to America. She and her family are settling in Georgia, but after landing, Judith wanders away from the docks and is attacked by a man in her father's employ. Running from her attacker she finds herself lost in a wilderness she is unfamilar with and being stalked by something not human.

  1. Virginia slid down the line, senses on razor edge. Damp stone and verdant moss generated a comforting cool.

The police chief breathed into her comlink. “Who knew we had caves like these under the city?”

The tech response from the top of the shaft was garbled and distorted. She could only make out,

    “We don’t.”

  2. My tattered boat rocks in the water. There is no place for me to dock along the rocky cliffs. I have floated along the coast for the setting of two suns when I see in the distance a castle set upon the rocks like a grand lady welcoming me back home with arms wide open.

  3. The challenge sounds cool. Congrats on the new books, Lisa. Fantastic!

  4. Title: Strange New World

In the depth of rock, a new world exists. A single beam of light illuminates the alien environment full of strange plants and growing things. Even the air smells different, like there is something more ... more alive to this place.

As my feet touch down on this new earth, I wonder what I’ll find.

  5. I chose the first picture.

    Knock, knock, knock.

“Mr. Wood, are you in there?”

“Are you sure this is the right place?”

    “Yes. I’m sure.”

“Well, have you tried calling him?”

“What do you think I’m doing now?”

    “No: on the PHONE.”

“That won’t work. These method actors can be impossible, and now that he’s working on 'The Hobbit'...”

  6. He watched them come, one after the other, sliding down their threads into his world. He watched them look around and waited. He found it curious how they touched the ground, and showed things to the plants that made a clicking sound. He wondered if they would touch his scaly flesh and click at him.

  7. The bay surrounded my castle, my fortress of solitude, on three sides. One slender road led beyond the walls, but I didn’t dare use it. Not during the day when God and anyone might see. An approaching storm shattered the sunlight and I shivered.

All bets were off when the sun hid her radiance.

    1. Edge of the seat stuff in just 55 words! Love!

Ultimately, it was the halfling’s long view that made him so effective. Patience wasn’t preferred; it was essential.

No grand army, no epic battle. Six weeks of dark cavern’s descent and he crept—unnoticed—into the darkest dungeon of Lord Sauron’s summer castle.

From there, the diminutive assassin could poison the master’s wine…and wait.

  9. I chose the second picture. (Also -- first time participant. Yay!)

    Title: Ssssshe of Few Sssssyllablesssss

She slithers in, ruddy brown trail following as damp moss soaks up the blood.

Under the rocks -- curled, coiled, comfortable now; her fangs retract; her breathing slows. Cold embraces Scales.

Yesssssss, she thinks, drifting to dreams, head already resting solidly on clawed dirty hands.

    Thissss place issss perfect.

  10. Feed Ye The Homeless
    Raymond C. Morris

Hunger ate away the flesh from his face until he looked a parody of life. Fishing pole in hand, I began teaching him to fish. Proverbs and such. The joy at his first catch filled me with pride, such that I cried until he ceased struggling, and took in that last full breath of water.

  11. Runaway Rat

He’d known they could not simply let him go. He was the realization of their dreams. The things their experiments had enabled him to do were too amazing to not capitalize on.

As the first of the assault troops descended on his refuge, he knew he would not allow them to take him back alive.

  12. Max had discovered a hidden wonderland. The moss on the walls gave off a light glow, reflecting off of something on the ground. It gleamed like metal. Her lips curled into a grin even as the head rose from the pile, smoke curling around its nostrils. Large reptilian eyes were the last thing she saw.

    Famished Fairy

Mabs stepped on his face, pushing herself up onto the ledge, being drawn by the pleasant scent of pie.
“Geez, cut your toenails!”Tibs grumbled, pulling himself up right after.
Smiling she made her way to the still warm prize, but was stopped by an invisible wall.
    “Not again!”
    “Firefly!” giggled the stealthy child
